Who is Soren Sorensen

 


Søren Sørensen (1868-1939) was a Danish chemist who made significant contributions to the field of chemistry, particularly in the development of the pH scale. Born on January 9, 1868, in Havneby, Denmark, Sørensen pursued his academic career at the University of Copenhagen, where he earned his Ph.D. in chemistry in 1899.


Sørensen's work at the Carlsberg Laboratory in Copenhagen focused on the study of proteins and enzymes. During his research, he discovered that the concentration of hydrogen ions (H+) had a profound impact on enzymatic reactions. This led him to develop a method for measuring the acidity or alkalinity of solutions, which would later become known as the pH scale.


In 1909, Sørensen published a seminal paper titled "Über die Messung und die Bedeutung der Konzentration der Wasserstoffionen bei enzymatischen Prozessen" (On the Measurement and Significance of the Concentration of Hydrogen Ions in Enzymatic Processes). In this paper, he introduced the concept of pH as a way to express the concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution.


The pH scale, which ranges from 0 to 14, is a logarithmic measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. A pH of 7 indicates a neutral solution, while values below 7 indicate acidity and values above 7 indicate alkalinity. Sørensen's development of the pH scale revolutionized various fields, including chemistry, biology, and medicine.


Today, the pH scale is widely used in numerous applications, from water analysis to food processing and pharmaceuticals. Sørensen's work on the pH scale has had a lasting impact on our understanding of chemical reactions and biological processes.


In addition to his work on the pH scale, Sørensen conducted research on the effects of ions on proteins and enzymes. He also developed methods for analyzing proteins and enzymes, further contributing to the advancement of biochemistry.


Sørensen passed away on February 12, 1939, in Copenhagen, Denmark. However, his legacy continues to influence scientific research and applications. The pH scale remains an essential tool in various fields, and Sørensen's contributions to the understanding of chemical reactions and biological processes continue to inspire new discoveries.
